Note Quite the Greatest

A huge disappointment. They took the life of one of the most interesting individuals of the last 50 years and made it boring. I usually like Will Smith, but did not enjoy his performance in Ali. He looked sleepy most of the time, totally butchered the Louisville accent (being from Louisville, I think I can tell), and missed the sing-song rhythms of Ali's vocal poetry. I was more impressed with Billy Crystal's old Ali impersonations, and I'm not a Crystal fan (go figure). Oversimplificatons are a given in biopics, but the portrayal of the Nation of Islam was a joke. Where was the fire and the rage? This was an organization that preached all white people were devils and thought that a spaceship was going to destroy America for its sins. In "Ali," their beliefs, and those of Ali himself, have been neutered for a mainstream audience. Malcom X's assassination scene seems to have been lifted wholesale from Spike Lee's biopic, complete with the soundtrack of "A Change is Gonna Come." In the meantime, such important figures in Ali's life as Angelo Dundee and Howard Bingham are left by the wayside. If you want to see a good Michael Mann flick, rent 'The Insider" or "Collateral." If you want to learn about Muhammd Ali, read Thomas Hauser's biography or watch "When We Were Kings." Skip this one.

I disagree....I thought this film was done very well Will Smith and Jamie Foxx were both excellent.

In regards to the books the best Ali books are "Soul of a Butterfly" and "Facing Ali" check em out if your interested.
