Movie Review by Zara
January 23rd, 2007

Ferguson sounds better with the Scottish accent

There's something wonderful about the British and their ability to nail home a funny subject without having to hit you over the head to do it. SAVING GRACE is a movie centered around marijuana, but unlike American films like HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO WHITECASTLE, it doesn't slam crude humor in your face, or drown you in nostalgia like DAZED AND CONFUSED. (For the record, I enjoy both of those movies for their own unique reasons, although not for the marijuana references.)

The movie centers around Grace, recent widow and botany enthusiast. Her husband has left her hundreds of thousands of pounds in debt, and being a middle-aged woman with no income, she turns to the most obvious source: drug dealing. The caretaker of her home is a Scottish stoner (played with idle perfection by Craig Ferguson, known best for his role on The Drew Carey Show) who introduces her to the idea by asking for assistance with his personal stash after his paycheck bounces. The two pair up to hydroponically grow a huge crop of marijuana, guaranteed to get her out of debt, and put him in a place of comfortable slackerdom.

The movie is sweet and light-weight. Blethyn and Ferguson are the British (& Scottish) versions of Cheech and Chong, without the blank stares and pointless dialogue. This movie isn't going to teach you anything new, but it's good for some hearty chuckles and a case of the munchies. And what more could one ask for from a stoner flick?
