Dude, Keanu... wake up
Keanu Reeves, one of my crushes when I was a teenager, looks bored out of his skull in this movie. Or tired. There are times when I really can't tell with the dude anymore. Perhaps that was the point of the character, to look detached and defeated. Or tired. Again... I'm not sure.
The movie is actually a fun one, although not fantastic. Mainly it's enjoyable thanks to the other actors in the smaller roles. When the major league football players go on strike, the league goes looking for some part time replacements. They find average guys, ones past their prime or ones looking for their shot but unable to get in due to something holding them back. (There's a player who's deaf. Great scenes including him make the movie more watchable.)
Of course the big leaguers are going to settle their strike and come back to the league. Everyone knows that. But they still need to be convinced to play as hard as they can. Enter Gene Hackman as their coach. Yeah, I was inspired too.
Point is... well, there is no great point to THE REPLACEMENTS. That's kind of what sports movies are about. Just showcasing people who play the sport and that someone wins and someone loses. Which is precisely why I don't watch real sports and only watch the movies. Because at least the movies have some good looking actors in the roles.
Even if they DO look tired and bored.
