Movie Review by AJ
July 29th, 2006

A sharp and witty seriocomic look at the Marquis de Sade and how he fueled a generation of depravity and sexuality...or, in essence, tried to free society from its less than comely shackles. Of course, if we're to judge by this picture, the Marquis' sanity is certainly questionable, but director Philip Kaufman and screenwriter Doug Wright (working from his own play) also manage to sneak in a bit of relevant social commentary on how we immediately ostracize or overmedicate anyone that shows a genuine creative disabandon for the world he sees around himself. The cast is what really livens up the material, from Kate Winslet to Joaquin Phoenix (slightly annoying in his nasally way as usual) to Michael Caine, and especially Geoffrey Rush in an energetic, brilliant turn as the Marquis de Sade. There are several very effective sequences in the film, but it's ultimately Rush who will make you remember it.
