Movie Review by Chris
June 16th, 2008

Finally I get the pleasure of sitting down and sitting through Pitch Black, which in my mind is one of my favorite science fiction films of all time. With some mixed genres like action/thriller/horror and sci fi, the film turns out to be one hell of a time. With some really great acting by lead man Vin Diesel, a stunning visual look of the movie and a major dose of suspense and scares, Riddick leads us through an amazing film. Riddick is a murderer, after escaping from prison though he is put onto a transport ship in the future. When the ship is knocked off course though and has crashed, Riddick escapes. Now though, he must help himself and the crew get off this planet, as theyre being attacked by creatures of the night.

Vin Diesel is probably one of the most well known actors in todays film scene. After playing roles in A Man Apart, The Fast and The Furious and Stray, the actor pretty much has covered many genres and has played many different characters. His performance in Pitch Black is done with great percision, as the character of Riddick is one of my favorite characters of any film. Mixing a sly mix of humor, seriousness and sarcasm, Riddick comes out as a likeable and hateable character. By the end, I think we begin to like him, then we begin to slowly have a hate for him yet again. His physical build also helps the character because Diesel is a big guy, and probably has no trouble with doing his own stunts and everything.

There is a very unique visual flair to Pitch Black, a flair which made the film known. The director has a way with colors blending with the environment. When the characters are outside on the planet, it seems as if everything turns a bright yellow, and the shots where the sun is in camera look amazing. There is a scene where a green flair is used by a character, and the whole fight is show with this greenish color which really brings out some of the environment a little bit better. Not to mention cooler. There are maybe about 5 moments where the camera just completely changes, the environments stretch along with the characters. You have to pay attention though because theyre very quick.

Pitch Black is actually a scary movie. As not only the character of Riddick a man I would not mess with, the idea which brings along with the character is creepy. During the day he must wear these black glasses which protect his eyes from the light. When it turns dark though and the glasses come off, he has sort of a night vision look on everything, this really brings out some of the character about Riddick. Well, the special effects of the film are spectacular and the creatures look fantastic. There were also many moments where the suspense is nicely done and it really makes the film better.

Pitch Black is a fantastic movie which really brings out the notice for directors to try and make better films.
