Movie Review by Steven
November 23rd, 2007

Movies like "Music of the Heart" rely on added sentimentality which is not needed. What is so likable about the film is that all the meoldrama is already packed in so there is not much to add.

The movie is about a divorced mother, Roberta Guaspari, played the great Meryl Streep who meets an old flame (Aidan Quinn). He introduces her to a principal(Angela Bassett) in East Harlem and out of thin air she starts a violin program and begins to teach students to play. (I should also let you know that the teacher has 50 violins).

10 years pass by and the program is sought after both students and parents. The students' names are pulled from a lottery. Then the kicker: the board odf education decides to cut funding and all arts and music programs are affected. Guaspari fights back and a charity concert at Carnegie Hall (which is well filmed)
follows.

A few years before the film, a small documentary called "Small Wonders", about Ms. Gauspari was featured. This caught the attention, I think, of producers.*

The film is well acted and is directed by Wes Craven. Craven has long been wanting to break from the horror genre. This is a good film. I am a Craven fan.
I normally do not like movies like this, but "Music of the Heart" is a good film in its own right.

* NOTE: IF you get the 2-disc edition DVD, the Small Wonders documentary is the second disc and it is a must see.
