Movie Review by Melanie
January 29th, 2007

This has to be one of my favorite movies of all time. There are too few real hero's today. We are surrounded by false celebrities and given shallow people to follow as hero's. Carl Brashear is one of America's real hero's.

Carl, played by Cuba Gooding Jr., is the son of a farmer. He joins the Navy in order to get out of his otherwise inevitable following in his father's footsteps. He quickly learns that although the Navy promises him a "big future", no matter how hard he works, he will never be much more than a cook to them.

Through his perseverance, Carl makes his way to diving school. Pushed down every step of the way, he becomes the first "colored man" to become a Navy diver. Through everything he has been through it seems that life if finally being fair to Carl, and he is getting what he deserves. Then there is an accident and he loses his leg.

Even with the loss of his leg he refuses to give up. He then becomes the first amputee diver in the Navy. The story of Carl Brashear is one that should be taught to every child who believes that they will never be able to get where they want in life, because of where they began. When someone can start with so little and achieve so much, nothing seems impossible.
