Movie Review by Chris
June 16th, 2008

With what seems to be the same films being released every year as the films made the year before, Memento is a completely new look at psychological thrillers. What Memento does so well is make a complete character story while creating a film which makes its audiences think more then just watch the movie. While the path of the film goes backwards, meaning that we see the end and work backwards while being criss crossed by other events, the movie is different then anything I have ever seen before. After his wife wwas raped and murdered, Lenny suffers from short term memory loss. To help him he takes pictures, write notes and gets words tattooed onto his body so that he does not forget. While suffering from short term memory loss though, he tries to find the man responsible for his memory problem and the death of his wife.

Honestly, Guy Pearce is not too big of a name to me. I might have heard it once or twice but I dont remember what films he starred in besides Memento. Anyways, his performance is fantastic. He does a really good job working with this memory problem and makes the character feel real. When something happens we get feelings for him and even though its not too shown, his performance brings out an emotional side for the film. Carrie Ann Moss plays as Natalie, a girl he meets who would supposedly help him. Well, we find many things out about her which I wont spoil but I think in this movie she looks fantastic. Certainly looks better then she does now. Joe Pantoliano is sort of our comic relief here. There is a lot of drama in this film and its good to see that we have a character so full of sh*t, that he still makes us laugh.

Memento is played out in a different way from our average thriller films. Instead of going from beginning to end, we go from end to beginning. As we continue to go back in time to see the events, we find more and more out about the ending. This makes us think a little bit because we must recap whats going to happen before finding out what caused it to happen. Instead of cause and effects, we have the effects but must find the cause. This got my mind racing in many moments through the film and I felt like the director and writer really put it together in a fine shape form.

This movie will have your brain racing to the extreme level. There is a major amount of suspense which makes many moments better then originally intented to be and it makes the movie all around better. So in the end, Memento is a fantastic movie. Combining many elements from different films, I felt as if the movie had tried to do something new, and completed it easily and quickly. An amazing movie, from end to beginning.
