Katie Holmes Fantabulous Breasts
Consider for a moment a movie starring a recent Oscar winner and two Oscar nominees directed by one of the most well known masters of horror and suspense, co-written by another multiple Oscar winner and nominee and ask yourself why only 6 years later not one of your friends can remember what it's about. Add in scenes with the glorious naked view of a young Katie Holmes' breasts and try to wrap your mind around how such a movie barely made back its budget in the US box office. Such is the curse of THE GIFT.
Perhaps it was just bad timing. Released shortly after THE SIXTH SENSE, THE GIFT seemed to be attempting to capitalize on some of the hype that was swirling around the unique thriller. Taking place in a small southern town, the story follows the life of a widowed fortune teller, a woman who does readings in exchange for donations of food and services. When one day the local rich businessman's daughter turns up missing, she begins to have visions of the young woman's demise. The movie is creepy without delving too deeply into the cornball nature that most supernatural thrillers veer into, but I credit most of that to Raimi's deft hand at directing.
Of course, there are nit-picks that I have with the film. Blanchett always looks a little too put-together to pull off the poor southern housewife gig, Greg Kinnear's performance is a bit dialed in and the ending is too convenient for my tastes. Yet the high points of the movie offset those details. Holmes' lines are limited and if you hold on until the end and have your finger on the pause button, you can get an excellent view of what lucky little Suri gets to feast on. Keanu Reeves doesn't nail his Southern accent (does he ever get any of them right?) but this is one of the few films when he attempted to be a bad guy. I've got to hand it to him, the man really does try, even if he falls slightly short. And Giovanni Ribisi will forever remain my favorite go-to actor when a psycho or mental deficient is in demand. THE GIFT is far from perfect, but it does pack enough juice to keep you sitting uncomfortably in your seat for a couple of hours.
