Movie Review by Zara

OOOOWWWWW!!!

First things first, did anyone besides me cringe when Hanks uses the skate blade to knock out his infected tooth? Jesus, I think that gave me nightmares for months.

The focus of this movie is on Hanks. There is some filler at the beginning and the ending, but the movie essentially revolves around him and his trusty (soccer? volley?) ball that he nicknames Wilson after the company that made it. It shows a man who had lived his life based on following a schedule and keeping on time now forced to go through time not knowing what hour or even day it was.

After the reality show Survivor first started posing the question of what people would be willing to do if stranded on an island, people have been preoccupied with how and if they could do what the "cast-aways" on the show could do. However, there is a huge distinction between having video cameras around all the time, participating in games and having social interaction available to you.

This movie poses the better question. If you were all alone, could you really survive? Not just in being able to find the necessary food, water and shelter that you would need, but could you manage to survive in your mind? Could you get though life with no human interaction, no one to talk to, no one to help you get through the day?

It's a good question, outlined well and acted out superbly as only Tom Hanks has grown to do.

Cast Away has grown to become one of my favorite Tom Hanks films. If you really think about how hard it must be to carry an entire film by yourself with a volleyball you really got to give Hanks even more credit then he already deserves!
