Dogs sure are popular. I am a cat person myself. I think cats are cute, cuddly, and whatnot. That's not to say I don't like dogs, but I don't like dogs as much as the people in the next film I am reviewing "Best in Show". Which is directed and written by Christopher Guest. I should rephrase that, also written by everyone's favorite bushy eyebrowed dorky funny man Eugene Levy. He also gets a writing credit on this fun little flick.
This film does not focus on the dogs as much as the recent film "Eight Below", although the dogs do get lots of screen time to shine, look cute, wag their tails and whathave you. But this film takes time to show you the obsession some people have with their dogs and how it can be rewarding, but also maybe a little obsessive. This film takes the time to show the dog owners and handlers themselves as they prepare to compete in a national dog show.
This film is a funny mockumentary that shows the sometimes sweet, sometimes cute, but also wacky world of these dog shows which get people from all over to participate and often take quite seriously. This film is full of funny, eccentric, wacky, different dog lovers from all over the world. I'll do my best to describe everyone involved, but it will be a hefty task indeed.
John Michael Higgins and Michael McKean as a gay couple who have a very prissy looking dog. Eugene Levy whose wife Catherine O'Hara has gotten around the block a bit, and then some. Parker Posey and Michael Hitchcock who are a very unhappy couple with an even unhappier, and wild dog. Fred Willard as a commenter on this event who rarely talks about the event itself, much to dismay of his partner Trevor Beckwith (Jim Piddock) who takes the event as seriously as one can take it.
The film is one non stop gag and comical situation after another but I felt the film could have used some normal characters to counteract the comical characters in this film. At the times, it was a bit overwhelming as everyone was so bizarre, so weird, and so odd. The film could have benefited from some sane characters to give us a healthy balance.
But the film does make us laugh more often then not and it has a certain sweetness, cuteness, and likability to it, so I give it a mild recommendation.
