Movie Review by The Alpha Craig
October 7th, 2007

I simply am not there.

It is amazing what the mind will create in order to cope with traumatic or unusual circumstances. This movie was a reminder to me why I am glad that I never got caught in the rat race of high financial business. The world of expensive tastes, cars, clothes, clubs, restaurants and drugs just never appealed to me, despite the fact that I could never achieve any of them to begin with. It is a world I will never be a part of and I am grateful for that. I live a pretty low profile life and watching this film reinforces that I like my lifestyle.

Patrick Bateman lives a life of excess, money and material things with his friends. The pursuit and attainment of these things leaves his life feeling empty and he seeks more excitement. His means of escape is in violent murder of random strangers. As time goes on, Bateman finds it harder and harder to satiate his murderous desires.

Christian Bale (BATMAN: DARK KNIGHT) as Patrick Bateman is now officially one of my favorite characters in movie history. I almost feel like he isn't really a bad guy, just a byproduct of his lifestyle of excess and never being able to be happy with what he has. After all, what is there to have once you have everything? Plus, his critiques of popular music during the murder and sex scenes are just brilliant. He just has this candor to his voice that sparks of Casey Kasem. Justin Theroux (THE TEN) as Timothy Bryce and Josh Lucas (HULK) as Craig McDermott were great as the total enabling jerk friends who made Bateman feel he needed to compete for those ridiculous things. Chloë Sevigny (ZODIAC) as Jean was one of the more likeable characters that seemed to be more grounded in reality. She really seemed to be supportive of Bateman without helping his self-destruction. Reese Witherspoon (PENLOPE) as Evelyn Williams, Samantha Mathis (A STRANGER'S HEART) as Courtney Rawlinson and Willem Dafoe (SPIDERMAN 3) as Detective Donald Kimball were all good I their respective roles, but weren't given enough screen time to really showcase their talent. Jared Leto (CHAPTER 27) Paul Allen was great as being everything Bateman wanted to be and was so condescending in his delivery. He was the perfect show-boater that made everybody else's accomplishments seem less impressive. This is a good example of how bad things get when you get everything you want in life and yet feel that you have nothing at all. It makes me remember that not having it all will always give me something to strive for.
