This highly controversial film, based on Brett Easton Ellis' novel, is really more of a horror comedy than a patent excuse for graphic violence and pornography, as is often said of it. Director and co-writer Mary Harron turns what could easily have been a bleak character study in psychoticism into a hip satire of yuppie life in 80's corporate America. Her anti-hero, Patrick Bateman (played with angst and a nasty verve by Christian Bale, his breakthrough performance), is a study in neuroticism and vanity, a killer in the making – a corporate flunky enraptured by the need to succeed. There is much talk about what's real in the movie versus what's a delusion, but Harron wisely makes the point less about to what extent Bateman is a murdering maniac, and more about how American idealism threatens to confuse the identity of the young and naïve.
