Movie Review by B Movie Ben
March 5th, 2008

We three kings be stealin' the gold...

Favorite Movie Quote: "Bush told the people to rise up against Saddam. They thought they'd have our support. They don't. Now they're getting slaughtered."

We certainly know after Abu Gharib that wartime atrocities often occur because we cannot expect every soldier (American or otherwise) to operate by the book. We see that in this film with Americans killing a surrendering soldier and a steady stream of racist comments.

While George Clooney and company - Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube, and Spike Jonze - hunt Kuwaiti gold after the cease fire, they realize (at least Clooney does) that there is still a war going on. Iraqis wanting to be free, and believing George Bush's promise to help them, are being tortured and slaughtered by Saddam's soldiers.

Gold becomes a secondary goal, and eventually is completely traded for the freedom of a couple of dozen civilians. In this way a few soldiers redeemed American honor and made this an outstanding film about understanding and peace and the evils of conflict.

This is one of those hidden treasures of Clooney's.
