Movie Review by Zara
February 6th, 2007

Gotta love a play on Shakespeare

No one really knew who the stars of this movie were when the film was first released. One of the first things that people saw Ledger in (and not as the more identifiable blonde but as a brooding brunette) and the film which Julia Stiles really took the reins and ran with, I rather enjoy this movie.

Based on the play "The Taming of the Shrew" by Shakespeare, the movie already had the upper hand in adpating something that I already loved. When I was a young girl I got to see "Kiss Me Kate" another play based off the first play, as well as love the Moonlighting episode where the characters of Maddie and David were put into the roles here.

Stiles is an uptight older sister, a badass of sorts with ideas of her own on how she'd like to live her life. Her younger sister is the popular cheerleader who just wants to be allowed to date. Convincing a guy (Joseph Gordon Levitt has been awesome for years) to help get her sister a date so that their restrictive father will allow her to go out as well is the modern day equivalent of getting the older sister married off first.

Because Stiles is so abrasive, the only guy that can be found to take on the task is Ledger, the school miscreant. Of course, I already knew the story and what was going to happen next.

What I didn't know was that I would giggle as much as I did, or that I would end up liking Stiles so much. A pretty blonde who isn't drop dead gorgeous, there is a spark behind her eyes which draws you in and holds you there. Ledger, talking in his native Aussie accent for probably the last time until NED KELLY, was a find.

I hate to brag, but there are times when I watch a movie and I think - "That guy? He's going to be huge." - and I'm usually right. I did it with Keanu in RIVER'S EDGE, I did it was Jude Law in GATTICA, and I did it with this flick and Ledger.

I'm sure there have been times when I've been wrong, but I wouldn't remember them any more than someone else would remember which actor I was talking about.

Long story short... one of the best teen movies out there.

"But mostly I hate the way I don't hate you
Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all."

I agree with Lisa. If this one comes on TV, I've just got to watch. And I love "Kiss Me Kate". :-)
