Only Things I Like
Favorite Movie Quote: "Kissing is not what keeps me up to my elbows in placenta all day!"
I can't remember how I ended up watching this movie the first time; I'm pretty sure it started with hearing my sister-in-law listening to the soundtrack and asking her what it was. I wasn't that interested in watching it, teen movies being really hot and cold. You never really know what you're going to get.
Based on Taming of the Shrew, a brilliant play that unlike most of Shakespeare's work is very mired in its time, 10 Things I Hate About You covers the basic concept applied to high school. The Stratford sisters mirror the two sisters in the play. Once popular Kat (Julia Stiles) is now rebelious and anti-social while the younger Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) is shallow and naive. New student Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is immediately smitten with the bubbly ray of sunshine that is Bianca but, as school tour guide Michael (David Krumholtz) informs him, she can't date by order of her father (a scene-stealing Larry Miller). The plan: get prettyboy douchebag Joey (Andrew Keegan) to front the cash to pay bad-boy Patrick (Heath Ledger) to tame the shrew.
There's no big surprises here; 10 Things I Hate About You, story-wise is pretty basic. You know the guys are going to get the girls and all trespasses are going to be forgiven. This film survives on heartfelt performances from a great cast having a blast making a fun movie. Aside from those listed above, Susan May Pratt provides cuteness and enthusiasm as Kat's best friend Mandella, Gabrielle Union as snarky pop-b*tch Chastity, Allison Janney as quirky sex-novelist/principle, and a stash-swiping Joe Isuzu.
But the moment I went from liking the movie to loving the movie was when Ledger busts out a high-stepping song number "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You", and eludes security guards - patting the fat one on the butt. It's moment like this in movies when one person is trying to win over another that the suspension of disbelief is no longer necessary. After this, if you posess any capacity for romance, you're rooting for the happy ending.
10 Things I Hate About You? I can't think of a one.
