A Napoleon Dynamite for Punks

I've noticed that people either love or hate this movie. Told from the perspective of a young degenerent living in Salt Lake City, Utah, (not exactly the mecca for the punk mentality) there isn't much that goes on. He hangs out with his friends, goes to watch music, screws a few girls and just ... well, does a whole lot of nothing special.

I like this movie mainly for the sharp performance by Matthew Lillard (yeah, I'm an uber fan) and that of his main buddy. The duo remind me of many of the friends that I've had, screwed up and directionless and yet a blast to spend time with. That could just be because I don't mind doing nothing at all or destructive sh*t, but it's just how I feel about that.

I can't imagine trying to grow up being different in a town that was so conformed, whether that be in the Mormon state of Utah or the Conservative state of Texas. They should just export teenagers out of the state until they're done growing up before subjecting them to growing up in that life style.

This movie was based on real characters who lived in SLC in the early 1980s. It's been awhile since I've seen it, but if I remember, one guy commits suicide. He's based on a guy who was known as Depression Dan who ran with the Cantebury brothers. He's still alive to my knowledge. I was just a kid myself, but had begun a career in law enforcement, which is how I knew these people. Many Utahns, not just Mormons, were scared to death of these kids for no reason. Then again, this was before SLC had much diversity and relatively little violent crime.

The movie caught the spirit of what these kids lives were like at that time.
