Movie Review by Jesse

Disappointed with Polanski

This was an interesting film. It was a little too odd for my tastes, but the story was very contagious. It still makes me wonder about the strange plot twists in it and I am trying to figure them out. It's odd because the plot seems very familiar. It's like a mix between The Da Vinci Code, End of Days and Roman Polanski's other satanic film Rosemary's Baby (which is far superior to this).

Roman Polanski usually impresses me, but this didn't seem to be quite his style. It felt like it was a project just to fill his spare time. Nonetheless, it was still entertaining. Johnny Depp can really make a movie watchable even if the other actors are quite poor. Frank Langella was wasted here I though and Lena Olin was definitely over-acting in most of her scenes with all that screaming and clawing. Newcomer Emmanuelle Saigner was just awful in her very odd yet important role. I don't know if it was the acting or just the way she presented herself that irritated me, but something about her was annoying.

This film, despite its redundant plotlines, had some very spooky scenes. I do believe that Roman Polanski is an amazing director (which he has proven to us with film and film again), but with this he slightly disappoints.

I have never heard of this film before I saw it the other day at the video store. So I figured it had Johnny Depp and was directed by Roman Polanski... it must be good. Well, it was good, but it just fell below my standards. This film is based on the novel by Arturo Pérez-Reverte and probably does it no justice. I haven't read the book, but from the film, I can tell. It's a great concept, but the passion that Polanski puts into most of his films just wasn't here.

It was an entertaining movie with a terrific score by the way, but I can't really see myself watching this again. If I did it would have to be for the one scene where Lena Olin shows us some skin. Other than that, this film is mediocre.
