Movie Review by Jarrod
September 16th, 2007

'The Mummy' doesn't really try to be a remake of the old horror classic, and I am kind of glad it doesn't, it might be less fun. Spectacular special effects and a superbly entertaining performance from Brendan Fraser make this at least worthy as a weekend distraction. Fraser is Rick, an American who uncovers the lost city of Hamunaptra out in the desert, one that supposedly has great riches. This sparks the interest of Evelyn (Rachel Weisz), a scholar of ancient Egypt, and her fumbling brother Jonathan. Rick offers to lead them to Hamunaptra.

They race there against a group of cowboys accompanying a stuffy professor (Jonathan Hyde), and meet resistance from the city's guardians, led by Ardeth Bay (Oded Fehr), who worry about the resurrection of the title creature, who is actually a priest named Imhotep (Vosloo), buried alive after betraying the king (or pharaoh, I suppose). He, of course, comes back to life, and seeks to revive his lost love, Anck Su Namun. Humor blends well with action, and a nice little romance develops between Rick and Evelyn, one that the sequel would turn into a marriage. I like this better than 'The Mummy Returns', which introduced us to the Scorpion King, who would end up with his own movie.
