Movie Review by Terrence
May 11th, 2007

Not as bad as you might think.

'Message in a Bottle' is one of many films based on a Nicholas Sparks novel. And while Sparks novels border on the sappy or sentimental side a great many of them can be enjoyable on level.

In this outing we have Kevin Costner and Robin Wright-Penn playing the lead characters and the chemistry together is wonderful. Paul Newman also shows up playing Costners father in a very good cranky old-man type performance.

Robin Wright plays a woman who while working at a newspaper comes across a 'message in a bottle'. The letter she finds sparks interests from her newspaper and its readers. Then more letters are found and Penn is determined she is going to track down the author and get a great story out of it.

She travels to a small coastal town where she believes the author of the letters resides and the story from this point on focuses on who her journey to find who the letters where about and why.

She finds Costner who is a widower still morning the loss of his wife after some years. While spending time with him she comes to see him for the person he his and of coarse he falls for her as well

The movie does a wonderful job of balancing the different view points of the characters and the chemistry between Costern and Penn is spot on. It is understated and rich at the same time.

This is a film worth checking out.
