Movie Review by Zara
April 6th, 2007

Looking back

When I first saw this movie, I was one of the few people to watch it on the big screen. Not released wide, I sat in a small art house theater and wondered why it had been made. I understood at the time that it was based on a book written by one of the children in this plot outline.

When I think about this movie now, as a mother, it is incredibly disturbing to me. Winslet plays a hippie chick kind of mom who drags her two daughters around different countries, looking for a new man to f*ck along the way and having little concern for what her children might get exposed to.

While those little girls might have grown up thinking that they were going through a great adventure, in reality they were just being abused by their self-centered and neglectful mother.

I'm not giving this a low rating because I didn't like the subject matter. I'm giving it a low rating because it is slow and boring in addition to making Winslet look absolutely dreadful in an attempt to make her look sexy in that hippie chic way that was popular around the release of the flick.
