Movie Review by Zara

No more screaming booger eaters

I actually had to think long and hard about how to begin the review for this movie. OK, maybe that isn't entirely true. I left the page blank, wandered off to find some snack food and then forgot about that blank page for a couple of days. Doesn't sound very promising for the movie, now does it? The thing about HAPPY, TEXAS is that it's easily forgettable. But somehow you end up coming back to it. Why? Because it's one of those movies that's perfect if you're looking for a simple giggle to erase your daily woes.

The story follows a couple of petty criminals who break out of prison while on chain gang duty, chained to a much more dangerous felon. While looking for a place to stow away, they steal a camper unknowingly belonging to a gay couple who are pageant trainers. After the camper stalls, they are picked up by the local town sheriff and confused for the trainers. While there, a plan is devised to rob the poorly secured local bank during the harvest festival.

I'm a Steve Zahn fanatic. Sadly, my habit of watching everything he's in rarely is compensated with a good movie. He tends to be the best part of no matter which flick he graces, but a girl can only withstand so many DADDY DAY CARE's and the like. Luckily, this is one of his most endearing performances, as a Southern man who believes he is a major hard nose, eventually won over by a group of little girls. William H. Macy is the other shining star here; His performance as the town sheriff who reveals that his sexual identity is less than on the straight and narrow, even though his personality is. There is definitely the likelihood that you will walk away from this movie and forget all about it, but during the 2 hours that you watch it, you won't find yourself bored senseless, as you might actually be watching a pageant for 8 year olds.

You can never go wrong with William H. Macy. Although this was filmed in California, you can't imagine the excitement of the folks in Happy. It is a dot on the map close to where I lived and they were Happy just to have a movie named after them, if if they had a gay sheriff in it.
