I was surprised

Alright, I think you all know my feelings on Scorsese at this point. So color me surprised after watching this film this afternoon and realizing that I actually liked the damn thing.

I will bring up what I think was the movie's weakest point. Scorsese has a love of music, that much should be obvious. He loves his songs big, loud and overblown. Great for some films and under the right instances. In this case, it carried this feeling that the director had little faith in the story that he was telling and was attempting to distract the audience by covering it up with the loud beats and the wicked camera angles.

The thing is, the story IS interesting. I just wish he could have toned down the music long enough for me to really focus on it.

Plus, is there any movie that an appearance by Patricia Arquette won't cure? Her soft-spoken character who is rough around the edges is precisely what the movie needed to bring it back down to a level of realism. I'm all for stretching the limits at times, but this story had some definite "real" angles that needed exploring.

It's an interesting watch. And that's coming from a Scorsese hater.
