Modern Love Tragedy
This brilliant film by post-feminist indie filmmaker Kimberly Peirce tells the true story of Teena Brandon, a Texas woman with a sexual identity crisis who dressed as a man and called herself Brandon Teena while trying to fit in with a rough crowd in Nebraska. This is a modern tragic tale of love, betrayal, violence and identity.
Hilary Swank won a deserving Best Actress Oscar for her role as Brandon. I don't know if any other actress could be so convincing in such a sexually ambiguous role. She breaks your heart with the struggle of hiding her sexuality from those around her, stuffing her crotch and hiding tampons under mattresses. But her love for a young mysterious girl (Chloe Sevigny), makes you believe that despite everything maybe true love can survive.
Peter Sarsgaard and Brandon Sexton III are brilliantly frightening as Brandon's buddies turned enemies. They terrify while also being charming and surprisingly innocent.
This is one of the best and most groundbreaking films in recent memory. Not to be missed.
