Boondock Saints (1999)

And shepherds we shall be.
This movie is a definite example of thinking outside the continuity box. I love the whole non-linear angle. It is something that needs to be done just right, or it ruins the story structure of the entire movie. Now I hope I don't give away too much of the movie, but it was one of the main selling points for me to see it.
Twin brothers Connor and Murphy were worked in a meat packing-plant. The decided to go out and celebrate Saint Patrick's Day and inadvertently start a war with two Russian soldiers who were sent to take ownership of their favorite bar run by a tourettes syndrome sufferer. The Russians decide to retaliate and the brothers kill them in self-defense. FBI agent Paul Smecker was called in to investigate this murder and others committed by the brothers who go by the name "The Boondock Saints."
Okay technicality aside, this was a well-written movie with a lot of great characters. Sean Patrick Flanery (KAW) as Connor MacManus and Norman Reedus (AMERICAN GANGSTER) as Murphy MacManus as would be saints were great choices. Billy Connolly (FIDO) as Il Duce was another good choice as a killer with a huge sense of honor much like the brothers. Willem Dafoe (SPIDERMAN 3) as Paul Smecker was great as a gay FBI agent. He didn't play it as the stereotypical flamboyant gay man, just a cop who happened to be into other guys. Ron Jeremy as Vincenzo Lipazzi was an interesting choice, who would think he would be playing a pervert huh?
I have kept this review pretty short because I don't know how saying "This is an awesome movie" multiple times is going to help. It is a great story, likeable characters, compelling plot twists and a lot of fun. The flash back sequences take a little getting used to, but once you do it is a great way to see how the events of the movie unfolded. Be ready for the Sequel "Boondock Saints: All Day Saints."
