American Beauty (1999)

Instant Classic
On occasion a film will come along that will personally affect me to the point of tears. This film will help me to better understand myself as well as those around me and ultimately better prepare for the world outside my base and redundant reality. The films that tend to leave this kind of everlasting mark are rarely fantasy or adventure pieces, rather they tell the tale of a family very similar to mine in a world like my own dealing with situations I all too well understand.
'American Beauty' came along like a jackhammer to the brain. Here suddenly was a father as flawed and complex as my own; a mother attempting to make reality into her own fantasy just as mine does; and a teenage girl coping with her sexuality, relationships and grasping at the dream of leaving it all behind. This is my family, this is every family in some way, shape or form, and that is the brilliance of this film.
Sam Mendes made a debut unlike any other with this beautiful, jarring and epic film about suburbia. It will live on in my mind as one the films that truly shaped by adolescence.

I remember your excuse once for a pitifully short review was that there just wasn't enough to say about certain movies.
Somehow, I doubt that applies with this one.
My main problem with you was that you became all about the numbers and less about the quality at one point. I'm all for healthy competition - it's the main reason why I made a bet with myself to write so many reviews - but mine were always legitimate in appropriate content and length. Since I work for the site, reading this crap from you became an embarrassment to me, especially since I was the one who found you over at MySpace. I just don't care for people making me look bad. |

I don't appreciate your attitude toward me or the comments you leave. I am sorry you feel ownership over the site because you work here, but it was my understanding that this was a public community where people are allowed to write as much or as little as they would like, within reason.
