One of my personal favourite Foreign Films
When this movie opened, I knew right away it was going to be a smash hit. The first 20 minutes of screentime were absolutely amazing and the rest of the film wasn't any less superb. Celia Roth gave an amazing performance... an Oscar-worthy performance as Manuela, a mother who has lost her son and is in search of his father in Barcelona. Marisa Paredes is absolutely phenomenal. She plays the Bette Davis-like character and comes off the screen an amazing star like Bette Davis. This film is so close to All About Eve it's almost scary. Huma's character is exactly like Margo Channing and Manuela's character is like Eve's. It's a dramatic masterpiece, this film. It won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1999 and was unfortunately left out of any other nominations. This film is absolutely perfect and should be watched by anyone who loves All About Eve, A Streetcar Named Desire and Foreign Films. Absolutely amazing.
