American History X is a film in which for a long time I have been meaning to sit down and watch. I read a few reviews on the film and found out that it was absoulutely an amazing movie, and now that I have finally sitten down and watched it all, I am amazed. This is one of the most brutally controversial films I have ever seen, even though it deals with such situations like racism and hate, I found myself agreeing to many of the ideal topics brought up in the movie. With a strong character tale which made me enjoy and like the characters, the film became very moving.
The opening sequence of the film realy kicks off your character study of Derek, as he is found guilty of shooting two black men while in attempt to steal his car. One thing this film does well, is the whole you never judge a book by its cover, as we, the audience, assume Derek is seriously racist and is just doing this out of hate and need of violence. But as the film continues, we see that this whole experience has changed him, and in exchange, has also changed his brother Danny. While going to prison helps him in personal ways, other people seem to be disturbed by the changes.
There is one particular sequence in the film which is absoulutely frightening and brutal, and is claimed one of the sickest scenes of film. The famous curb stomp sequence was mind blowing and gut wrenching. As I watched the movie, it got more brutal as a graphic gay rape is performed, I found myself astonished by the realism, but disgusted by the content.
Edward Norton put up a great performance in Fight Club, but his performance here is unforgettable. Derek is the kind of character where you need, not just any actor, but Edward to pull him off. As he is an astonishing and real character, Edward brings him to life.
