just like being a 14 year old girl again!
or for some of you... it may be the first time...
this comedic tale is a true coming of age story about Vivian, a buxom tomboy who lives with her single parent father and two brothers. her father is a scammer with a gambling problem, so she is used to packing up and leaving varioius slummy apartments late at night to dodge overdue rent.
After her drug out, spoil little rich girl cousin (played by Marissa Tomei), comes to live with them, her uncle agrees to give the nomads an allowance that gives them enough money to move into a nice apartment... with... FURNITURE!
There are no interesting plot twists, no suprise endings, lots of subtle humor and some low brow humor. Mostly this story is just so endearing because it paints an honest picture of what its like to be fourteen, on the cusp of womanhood, with hormones raging, and yet unlike many Teen movies, it also shows Vivian's struggle to understand the people around her and to find her own place. She loses her virginity to the older neighborboy, just to "get it over with", and then admonishes him to keep it quiet so that she doesn't get some kind of reputation... "its a building thing".
Of course, there is also the provacative bathroom vibrator scene. and some gratuitous nudity...
given that the main character is 14 years old (in the movie anyway), i often find myself wondering how the "censors" didn't scream "kiddie porn"... it would be short-sided of them if they did, because although this movie has sex in it, its not really about sex...
overall, some excellent acting, a brutally honest story, some cheesy dialogue, some joke that fall flat, but a lot of fun to watch!
