A Really Fun Film...
Favorite Movie Quote: "That god damned plane? That's a commercial airliner! It's 5 miles high going six hundred miles an hour. They wouldn't see a nuclear explosion if they were looking for it, much less a flare!"
Is this film an Oscar winner? No! Should it be? No! Do Anne Heche or Harrison Ford give the best performances of their careers? No! Is this a fun film that you can watch over and over and still be entertained? Yes!
I really enjoy this film every time I watch it. There is something about adventure comedies that just never get old. The story of this film is simple....two people survive a plane crash and end up on a desert island. Trying to figure out a way to get off it. Sort of like a modern day Gilligan's Island without all the people and instead of a boat they have a wrecked plane.
I especially like Anne Heche in this film because she makes you believe her character's emotions without a doubt. Also being that she is or was a lesbian in real life its amazing how you feel as if she is actually really in love with Harrison Ford's character. David Schwimmer gets on my nerves in this film, most of his films are bad....he was great on Friends and funny as hell but he gets film roles that are almost spin offs of Ross....and it just doesn't work but so many times.
I guess this is the type of film that is fun for a few reasons. One you watch this and wonder if you were put in the same situation then what would YOU do? You also respect the love that the two survivors start to build for each other and it makes you feel really good seeing the relationship start to turn. As an audience member you want these two characters to fall in love.
The story gets a little over the top with the whole "pirates chasing them around the island" angle. I mean this film very easily could have been scripted with no other humans causing panic and despair among the characters...it just seems a little over the top when some wild animals or snakes could have been much easier to believe as a threat. Danny Trejo is one of the pirates but I don't believe he speaks one word in the film.
Check the film out, its a fun adventure with several funny scenes / lines and a great on screen chemistry between Heche and Ford.
