A Great American War Film!
Saving Private Ryan
Starring Tom Hanks, Tom Sizemore and Eddie Burns
Rated R
Saving Private Ryan is an American war film directed by the amazing director Steven Spielberg. Steven has been highy appraised for accomplishments on this film, mainly from war veterans and critics all over the world. Being filmed after Stevens other WWII hit Schindlers List, Steven tells the story of eight men on their journey to find one guy, in which they dont know if he is alive or dead. The movie tells a great human story, as the film goes deeply into the characters and really gets you to feel what the characters feel and see what they see. From the very graphic opening of the film all the way to the last fight, you will be engaged in what I consider possibly one of the best war movies ever made.
Tom Hanks plays one of the most haunting and realistic characters I think he has ever played in a film besides Forrest Gump. Now Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks have worked with each other many other times before. Mainly a lot of the story focuses on his character, basically because he is a big mystery to the audience in the film. I think Steven did a good job with doing that because it engages you more into the movie, the plot and most of the characters. Tom Sizemore appears yet again in another war movie. I think he plays great though in this one as Mike Horvath. Hes a character in which you love to love and to hate. Mainly he is a little bit of an ass, but he gets his men in and out alive. Barry Pepper also makes another appearence in another war movie as Jackson, the teams sniper. He gets all of the best lines in the film, mainly when he prays before shooting somebody. Matt Damon plays as our Ryan, one of the first times I have seen him in a film like this.
The war scenes in the film are so realistic, its sad. The opening D-Day Invasion scene has been recognized everywhere as the greatest battle scene ever in a movie. Taking up the first 45 minutes or so of the movie, it is very grpahic and realistic. Steven really puts you onto that beach while these men were fighting. All of the fights are shown ina gratiously graphic way, because Steven wanted to make the most realistic fight scenes he can. The camera style is absoulutely incredible, actually putting you in the middle of the battles. As it shakes and stirs to all the explosions and noise, sometimes it does get annoying, but it adds an experience to the film.
