Loving Leonard
When I was about 13 years old, I picked up my first Elmore Leonard book and fell in love with his simple and straight forward prose. He could tell a good story, create characters who were believable and likeable even if they were criminals, degenerates or outright a**holes. Leonard knows how to write a book.
Problem is that not every director knows how to make a Leonard book come out well on film. One of my favorite books by him was turned into a mediocre movie (TOUCH) and one of the books which I figured they would have the most success in adapting (GET SHORTY) fell far short of my expectations.
However, I never thought that they would get OUT OF SIGHT right. So I went into the theaters expecting the worst. What I got was a blast of wonderful to the face.
Long before Jennifer Lopez was known as the diva that she's since become, there was a time when I could appreciate her beauty. She strove hard to get to the point in her career where she doesn't really have to work at it anymore. In these performances (including the one in this flick), she really does shine. You can see why she ended up becoming a household name, even if that name is now despised.
George Clooney, never quite the heartthrob in my opinion that everyone else seems to find him, is f*cking sexy as hell in this flick for me. A career criminal who shanghais a federal agent while escaping from prison and manages to convince her to fall for him, you completely see why she does. (And yet doesn't... another great angle to this movie that would need spoiler alerts if I got into.)
OUT OF SIGHT is a great flick based on a great book. Everyone should be patting themselves on the back about this one.

I love it when the movie gods do justice to a great book. For me it was Danny Boyle with train spotting.
I haven't seen this movie but it'll be on my list........oh and George Clooney totally did it for me in "From Dusk Till Dawn". |
