Movie Review by Seth C
February 13th, 2006

Films based on skits from "Saturday Night Live" are usually really, really bad mainly because stretching a three minute skit out into a ninety minute plus long feature film is absurd. The "Wayne's World" films were the best because the filmmakers acknowledge it's flaws, threw them out the window and basically started from scratch. Those films were funny and entertaining, as was "Coneheads" and "The Ladies Man," which was based on the one Tim Meadows skit that made it to air (or at least it seemed that way).

However, with these few exceptions, there's a "Superstar" and "A Night At The Roxbury" waiting around the corner to ruin whatever "SNL" film will follow. "Roxbury" was just a bad idea to begin with because the skit it was based on was paper thin; the skits didn't even have dialogue in them, for God's sake! Sadly, the film does and although some ideas are amusing ('Emilo!'), the film simply falls flat at being another pointless film we will forever see within a constant loop on USA or TBS.

I will say, it is nice to see the early stages of Will Ferrell's comic genius and the Cameron Crowe jabs we get at the end of the film, in which within five minutes we get both a "Say Anything..." and a "Jerry Maguire" spoof, are comedy at it's best, however it's not enough to save this film. Nor is John Fortenberry, who directs this mess and has gone on to direct some great TV shows like "Action!," "The Bernie Mac Show," "Greg The Bunny," and one of the best from the past few years, "Arrested Development." Here, though, it seems he hadn't gained the brillance those future television shows possessed.

So, even though there are a few chuckles, trust me when I tell you to stay away from "A Night At The Roxbury" because by the end, it will only be the longest eighty-one minutes you've wasted in you life. Then again, I could be wrong, because this just so happens to be my LOVELY girlfriend's favorite movie of all-time. And hopefully since I took the time to call her LOVELY in this review, she'll find something better to do with her time besides kicking my ass for posting this.

I love you, baby! :) ... (nervous laugh; gulp)
