Underrated and underappreciated
This is probably my favorite of the original Disney animated flicks aside from LILO & STITCH. Yet most people don't remember that it's a part of the Disney line-up. People also forget that a young Christina Aguilera sang the theme song (and beautifully, I might add). In fact, this movie suffers from being unfairly forgotten.
The reason why I like this movie so much is because the heroine is so strong. Mulan refuses to buy into the ancient traditions of her ancestors even though it means disgracing her family for not being obedient. What better lesson for us to teach our children?
Oh, that's right. Most people want their kids to be well-behaved little versions of themselves. I forgot.
Eddie Murphy first perfected his animated voice technique in this movie before moving on the infinitely more successful SHREK, but you get to witness it here. His hyperactivity is perfect for a children's movie and helps to keep the kiddies involved.
But there is so much for the parents to enjoy her. The colors are rich and bold, the music is better than much of what had been produced with other films ("Be a Man" is a GREAT song) and I can't help but still get teary eyed when Mulan is finally given her due at the end of the movie for being the warrior that she is.
Plus she doesn't just cave automatically to getting married to the general. I love it.
I really, really love this flick.
