Movie Review by Ben

GODZILLA SUCKS!!!

read a review somewhere that quoted one patron saying after they had seen the film:

"This makes Jurrasic Park: The Lost World look like Citizen Kane!"

Justified. Totally justified!

Where do I start? The characters were all cliches, barely registering as humans. Kevin Dunn was the army captain who is always in a bad mood and barking out orders, Michael Lerner was your clueless mayor, and Matthew Broderick was the scientist who has his nerdish qualities and personality, but who still ends up being the hero even when he is upstaged by all the special effects. Maria Patillo (who looks a lot like Heather Graham) was cute, but her character belonged more in a sitcom than in a movie like this.

Maybe I should blame this on the direction of Roland Emmerich, a director who never seems to know just how cheesy his movies can possibly be. Independence Day was a classic of american cinema when you compare it to an overhyped mess like this one.

There's a scene in the beginning of the movie where three fishing boats are pulled backwards underwater into the water - a direct rip off of Jaws. This movie could take more notes from a movie like Jaws. Interesting characters, great acting, saving a movie where special effects are supposed to rule over everything else.

Furthermore, the music by David Arnold was waytoo much, Less could have been a lot more in this film. Everything here was way too overblown, robbing it of whatever suspense it could have ever hoped to have generated. I liked it better when the movie got quieter, that way the intensity of the movie built up more. But it all became overpiled with countless explosions and mass destruction we have all seen before, over and over again, and much better by the way.

Producer Dean Devlin and director Roland Emmerich appear to be big New York haters. In fact, New York always seems to be the target of destruction this summer, judging from all the trailers I have seen for movies like Deep Impact and Armageddon.

Now for Godzilla himself (or herself if you are not sure). You look at the monster, and it is all too clear to see that Godzilla is coming off as a visual effect. The more you are aware of this, the less threatening Godzilla is. I really loathe digital imaging and effects because they are so obvious on the big screen. There's one moment where Godzilla jumps into the ocean, and it looks like it was lifted directly from Alien Ressurection. Originality is not in existence in films these days, but what else is new? I did not go in expecting a great movie, but I was at least hoping it would be exciting and intense. It was neither.

Furthermore, the look of Godzilla was nothing particularly impressive or horrifying. It looked like a cross between a Tyrannosaurus Rex which had an amazing growth spurt and Alien. Once again, originality is thrown out the window, and we have Jurrassic Park all over again.

The only part that really scared me some was when the main characters discovered all the eggs Godzilla had lain. But then the newborns came out of their shells, and they all looked like Velocier Raptors, or Raptor wannabes.

You'd think after a film like Independence Day which was a huge hit worldwide but not exactly a critical favorite that the filmmakers would learn from their mistakes and make a better movie. We all thought Steven Spielberg would learn from his mistakes from Jurassic Park when he went off to make The Lost World, but nooooooooo! We get a movie that is even worse, yet it is swtill bound to make tons of money. But give producer Dean Devlin some credit. He came to realize that Godzilla was going to beat out Titanic as the highest grossing domestic film ever. Even if Godzilla was better than it was, it still would never even come close.

A lot of people say that James Cameron is a big egomaniace and an a**hole towards his cast and crew. He probably is, claiming that he can make these kinds of movies better than everyone else. But after Godzilla ended, I think he can brag all he wants until he makes a tremendously crappy movie. I don't care how bad you thought the dialogue was in Titanic, Godzilla is pits in that department. Where the hell are all the writers?

And of course, we have the ending. Madison Square Garden ends up being destroyed, but for some bizarre and unexplained reason, there is an egg that was somehow unharmed. The baby burst out of the egg just as the movie went to dark. A lot of audience members probabily thought when they saw it:

"Oh no! It's a baby!!!"

But I just stared at the screen and I thought to myself:

"Oh no! It's an obligatory set up for a sequel!! SAVE US NOW!!!"

Just how many times can you destroy New York in the movies anyway?
