Movie Review by B Movie Ben
December 4th, 2007

Is this movie worth watching?

I rated this just below my recommended rating. I really struggled with this, but it just was too disappointing to give it a "watch" recommendation.

First, you have seven-time Oscar-nominated Robert Altman directing. It was a screenplay written by John Grisham (Runaway Jury, The Rainmaker). And the cast: three-time Oscar-nominee Kenneth Branagh in the lead as a Southern lawyer who gets mixed up with a supposedly traumatized woman (Embeth Davidtz) with a real whack-job for a daddy (Robert Duvall). Throw in Robert Downey Jr., Daryl Hannah, Tom Berenger, and Famke Janssen, and you think you might have the makings of a good thriller in a Southern locale. Oh, yes, add a hurricane just to give it the right atmosphere.

Unfortunately, the characters just never seemed to come to life. Everyone outside of Branagh just seemed to be going through the motions. Branagh was in a constant state of mania, and he wore me out.

Add to that the fact that the lighting on the last 20 minutes was so dark it was impossible to see what was going on.

It had promise that wasn't delivered. You would probably be better off watching the 1985 film Gingerbread Man with Ginger Lynn Allen.
