Movie Review by Simon
April 17th, 2007

Denzel Washington is the focal point of this restrained supernatural thriller that keeps the tension tight and the watcher guessing. Washington, playing a street detective as only he can, goes up against the forces of darkness as murder and mystery unfold.

The movie unfolds in flashback; Washington, playing Detective John Hobbes, takes us back to where events began in earnest, with the death by execution of serial killer Edgar Reese (a scene-stealing Elias Koteas). Reese is barely cold before copycat murders begin, and before too long, Hobbes finds himself caught up in events that he can't explain, his suspicion building that there is more to the case than meets the eye. Before too long, he finds himself questioning his own beliefs and unable to trust those around him.

Washington delivers his usual commanding performance, ably backed by buddy and sidekick John Goodman, sardonic commanding officer Donald Sutherland, and biblical scholar Embeth Davidtz. A cross between a detective movie and a horror flick, Fallen is slow-burning but entirely worth it, particularly for Washington fans.

Took me a moment to remember this one. I've watched it, but I guess it didn't make that strong of an impression on me if I couldn't recall it. Hmm...

I wanted to like this one. Tried really hard. Couldn't do it. It has been a few years, though...maybe I should give it a second chance...
