Horror Movie? Not.
There was a big push to get this movie advertised as being a horror movie, but I don't see it as such. I see it as an homage to the low budget sci-i flicks of yore, complete with a young and hip cast and topped off with a second half of cast comprised of favorite not-quites.
Most of the "adult" roles are played by people who are relatively appreciated by movie watchers and yet have never really been embraced by the mainstream. Jon Stewart taking one to the eye, Salma Hayek getting possessed and Robert Patrick reprising the evil sneer that he perfected in TERMINATOR 2 are all present and ready to garner a giggle.
The rest of the cast is a bunch of lesser know favorites, save for the now popular (and yet still not entirely mainstream) Elijah Wood and Josh Hartnett. Clea DuVall, one of my favorite little crazy girls, the wickedly delicious Shawn Hatosy and the prim and not quite proper Jordana Brewster round out the young cast. I would be remiss in not making mention of Laura Harris, the soft-voiced blonde with a surprise who later went on to bring to life one of the most fun television characters, Daisy from Dead Like Me.
This was never meant to be great cinema. It knows it as well, in the sly little winks where the actors look like they're about to burst into laughter. If you took it seriously... well, perhaps you need to stick to late night television. Just not the Daily Show.
