Movie Review by Jesse
December 14th, 2006

Stunning! Cate Blanchett is a revelation!

The second best movie of 1998. Shakespeare in Love doesn't come close to comparison with this film. It's visually entertaining from the fantastic cinematography, the stunning costumes and the striking art direction. Cate Blanchett delivers one of the best performances of the decade as Queen Elizabeth I of England. She outperforms Gwyneth Paltrow ten times and should, right now, have an Oscar in her hands for this unimpeachable performance. The one thing about Cate Blanchett that makes me love her is her distinctive voice. It makes the character that much more powerful when she delivers her lines with such vigor. She is the definite highlight in this wonderful cast. Joseph Fiennes is terribly dreary in his performances compared to his brother, Ralph. He does nothing for this film. Christopher Eccleston is terrific and so is Richard Attenborough. Geoffrey Rush always delivers a solid performance, but here I think that it's his character that is just so uninteresting that we don't really care for him in this movie. This film rightfully earned a spot among the five films nominated for Best Picture since it is flawless in every aspect. It's a stunningly remarkable film with a stunningly remarkable Cate Blanchett. Shekhar Kapur delivers with this classic. Sex, violence, sacrifice, war... a film that has it all has made my list of favourites.
