Movie Review by Chris
July 21st, 2008

Once every year, some grasshoppers come to an anthill and eat what the ants have made. One year, a bug named Flik by accident drops the seeds into the river. The grasshoppers give the ants one last chance to find the food by the next season. Flik goes off to find help, and meets up with a circus crew, giving the ants some hope...

A Bugs Life, directed by John Lasseter and Co-Directed by Andrew Stanton, is a perfect movie for kids. I had actually first seen this movie my senior year in Bio when it came to the end of the year and everything because my teacher was cool as hell, so we all sat and watched A Bug's Life. Now since I am a little older now and everything, I realize that the movie is meant for little kids and therefore doesnt point it's content towards adults. Back in the time when A Bug's Life was made, the technology and animation that was presented was like, amazing to everybody. Co Director Andrew Stanton had recently directed the perfect Pixar film Wall E, and working with Disney and Pixar again on A Bug's Life is good to see where Andrew began his career.

Flik is the one little ant of the entire colony which seems to be different. Every other ant does what theyre told and lives their lives normally, well, theyre lives as ants. Flik is like the standout of the colony, though looked down on by other ants, he seems to be the smartest and toughest of the group because of this passion he has for never giving up. He builds funny little machines which actually work and make the work easier for his fellow ants, but the queen and other workers just laugh at his inventions. Throughout the movie we see that the colony is actually happy he went away and they think that him not returning, is a great thing. Because whoever leaves the colony never comes back. So when he finally finds this circus troop of bugs who to Flik, seem to be like soldiers, he brings them back and gains new respect. People cheer for him and are deeply surprised by his return, but this doesnt last long after the colony finds out that the bugs are nothing more then lame and unfunny circus members. Flik never gives up though and this is actually a great motto for younger kids, no matter what anyone says follow your heart and in the end, it will work out. You just have to try.

Dave Foley does a great voice which matches Flik's body to a key. Kevin Spacey plays as Hopper, who is like the king of the grasshoppers. To the ants, the grasshoppers are like a higher bigforms and they try and do everything they tell them to do. The grasshoppers disrespect them and bully them, then by the end, we see that the ants have had enough. The thing about the grasshoppers though is that they know they can be beaten, they just think that the ants arent smart enough to realize that they can. In the end we see that every ant gains the personal strength to stand up for the colony, and all this is lead by Flik, the same ant everyone hated in the beginning.

A Bugs Life is funny and smart, but it also leaves a great message for younger audiences. Pixar and Disney have done it once again.
