It is sad for me to say that Armageddon wasnt all it couldve been. With director Micheal Bay and screenwriters JJ Abrams and Jonathan Hensleigh, the movie just didnt come out to its full potential. In fact, the 150 minute film was just to fake for my liking. As the movie couldve been a little more real, a little more serious and took a different approach, we might've had an amazing film. Instead, its an average 3 star rating in my book. The movie did have a funny and emotionally gripping script though. Plus some of the major actors put on fine performances all the way through. So I cant say that this is the best disaster films ever made, not even close. Armageddon is the story of, well, armageddon. A meteor the size of Texas is heading towards earth and if it hits, which it will in 18 hours, the earth will blow up. So they turn on the worlds greatest oil digger Harry and his crew of men. They must go through training and head into space to save the world by planting a nuclear warhead in the center of the meteor.
The acting was solid here and like most Micheal Bay films, features a pretty much all star cast. Leading the pack is Harry played by Bruce Willis. Bruce has put on good performances in almost every movie he plays in, and this is no exception. As a father in the film, he certainly builds up to be like one. Always yelling and trash talking but we side a newer more mature side of him in the movie. As the final scene with his daughter is tear jerking, it made me have a new look at Bruce Willis as an actor. Billy Bob Thornton puts on a nice little performance here. He kind of made the movie more serious within the fact that he practically has no sense of humor in this film. There are plenty of other actors in here but the bast is played by Liv Tyler who plays as Ben Affleck's girlfriend and Bruce Willis daughter. Her acting is superb here. As she nails every emotion right on track and really made a great character even better.
I never really had a problem with a Micheal Bay film until now. I loved Transformers, Bad Boys and was able to sit through The Island, but Armageddon takes it to far in some scenes. While the opening meteor shower scene was cool, the rest of the movie blew up to the point where the effects werent even to great even more. The space shuttle crash looked horrible and everything after they landed on the meteor looked really bad, including the actual close up meteor. The one thing that really bothered me though was that the movie breaks the reality barrier by a longshot. I mean we have people shooting guns and jumping cars in space. What!?!?!
The one major thing the film did well though was the emotional and characteristic level. The final 10 minutes of the film serve to be the tearjerking moments as we find out the fates of our characters. Plus, it seems to be that this is where Micheal Bay works the strongest when it comes to this movie, character and emotion. The directing of Micheal Bay camera wise gets a little repetitive with all the swing moves and quick editing.
So Armageddon falls short by a lot. With bad effects, no reality base at all and very little sense, the movie fails. But it does offer great emotion and character levels.
