Movie Review by Zara
January 25th, 2007

Ugh

This might sound odd, but I hate this movie on principal. My ex believed that it was one of the most romantic movies ever made.

Barf.

The world is going to end because there's a big rock that's going to crash into it. The astronauts know how to get there but they don't have the means with which to stop it. So what does the US government do? They enlist the help of a bunch of schmos who work in an oil refinery. Or something. Those guys that drill holes in our planet so that the a**holes with the Hummers can continue to live in peace with their little dicks.

There are amusing points in the film. There are some great special effects. Steve Buscemi delivers one of his trademark saving grace performances. And the idea that the guys were able to barter so that they would never have to pay taxes again is cute.

However... it's just another one of those big budget pictures, the ones that flash and dazzle to distract us from the fact that they've spent too much money making what essentially boils down to a piece of crap.

I know that I've been less harsh on other similar movies, so I'll redirect you to the first sentiment. I hate this movie on principal. I hate it because my ex loved it and that reminds me of him. Everything negative in the movie is just amplified because of that.

So... ugh.

Just got through listening to a podcast by Scientific American talking about the asteroid that will come near in about 30 years. I had to laugh when they mentioned not to go to Bruce Willis to save us. Blowing up asteroids is not a good idea - then you have lots of things to hit you instead of one!

Anyway, today's paper also said he was coming here with his band in May for a special showing of the film at the Space Center. Maybe I'll check it out then.
