Stone during the stoned years
I do not like Oliver Stone's work. I've tried watching almost everything that he's done but I just can't get into his style. I find it over-stylized and over-bearing, taking some great talent and putting them through the wringer until you can't recognize them any more. Plus he hasn't seemed to grab the concept that a movie can be good even if people stay clothed and go through some plausible situations.
In this venture he manages to wreck Sean Penn, an actor who can normally take anything thrown at him and still remain afloat. Mired in a movie that thinks the best way to tell a story is by mucking it up with too much unnecessary sex and plot twists, most of the time I watched this Penn had that look on his face like he didn't realize what he'd gotten himself into and was trying to get out.
The only person who looks at home in this little freak show is Phoenix, but that's because he's a f*cking weirdo who always seems to look at home in weirdo roles. It's harder to find him stuff that's normal that he seems comfortable with.
The only reason why I would recommend anyone watch this film is to see Jennifer Lopez attempt to sex it up. I say attempt because she also appears woefully out of place as the sex-pot with no morals. I think if seeing her in the tabloids has proven anything it's that she prefers to be married which means that she's really not all that into sex.
Oh, and you get to see her bare boobies, if that makes you happy. (For the record, they're really not all that impressive and you've got to see her in bed with Nick Nolte, so that really ruins the moment.)
