The hungrier, the better

I think it's a written fact somewhere that actresses are always supposed to be hungry. Whether it's starving themselves for a role or hungry to become famous, they're hungry. In the capacity of becoming famous, I like that they're hungry. I like to see someone try harder.

Jennifer Lopez earned her spot as a diva and is now in the coasting part of her career. It's the point where I stop watching what she's done and just focus on her older work where she was actually trying. In SELENA, she does just that. Although the slain Tejano singer's rabid fans would have demanded nothing less from her.

There are scenes at the end of the movie where you can see images of the real Selena and you have to give it to Lopez, she really got down not only her look but her mannerisms as well. The rest of the family is also appropriately represented, down to a fat sister that they didn't try to make thin for the sake of the movie.

It is a biopic that has a glossy veneer on it, though. However, I don't think that it matters all that much if you're not familiar with the backstory on Selena and her family. The movie is entertaining and paints a great portrait of a young woman who wanted nothing more than to be famous and yet stay true to her familial roots.

And the music is Selena and Lopez singing, so all the better!

Ahhh I remember the days when Jennifer Lopez was just an actress and a pretty good one at that before she was reincarnated as the hideous big buttocked she beast AKA J-Lo.
