Whenever a stage musical is made into a movie, the resulting product is always in doubt. For example, Evita came across on the screen as silly (despite very good music) and Phantom apparently was a box office failure despite trying to be true to the stage version. When I saw Les Miserables on stage in LA, I didn't grasp the entire story. I thought the film did a good job of "filling in the gaps." For those expecting the outstanding music to be recreated in the film, this had to be a disappointment (there was no music, to speak of). Overall, I thought Liam Neeson gave a strong performance and the story well done.
