Pearce gets no respect

This was the second movie that I'd ever seen Australian actor Guy Pearce in. The first was PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT, a movie in which he quite convincingly played a very effeminate drag queen. As I watched the steel-jawed detective with the perfect American accent stroll across my screen, I could only think one thing:

Damn, that guy's good.

I came to the conclusion in that moment that Pearce was either a straight actor who was brilliant at playing gay or a gay actor who was brilliant at playing straight. In the end, it didn't really matter. He was just damn good.

He doesn't get much credit in this flick, however. Most of the attention and praise went to Crowe and Basinger. the whole movie is actually filled with superb performances, tight directing, beautiful cinematography and a unique and captivating story. Whenever Hollywood tries to go back and recapture the magic of the golden years in tinsel town, it usually fails. In this movie, it sets the bar and then clears it.

Yeah, this was a brilliant movie. It was the first time I'd heard of either Pearce or Crowe. But the next film Crowe in was a movie called Romper Stomper in which he was out of this world. It's interesting that Pearce's first(?) big movie he was playing a drag queen and Crowe's first(?) big movie he was playing a neo-Nazi head basher.

Yeah, RS was Crowe's break. I remembered him long before LC because I fell for him in that movie with Denzel, VIRTUOSITY. He's great in that also. That was the first I saw of Crowe and looked at my friends and said, "Whoever that guy is, he's gonna be huge."

Took a few years, but... Zara's always right. :)
