In an average horror-type film genre that has been created since the revolutionary "Scream" movie, "I Know What You Did Last Summer" follows the same basic premise. You take several hapless teenagers (most of which are now extremely well-known) and mix in an unknown killer who picks them off one-by-one, and voila! You got a new slasher movie.
This movie centers around friends Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Helen Shivers (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Barry Cox (Ryan Philippe) and Ray Bronson (Freddie Prinze Jr). One night they accidentally hit a man on the road and kill him, and decide instead of going to the cops to throw the body in the ocean and never mention it again.
One whole year later, the teens are being stalked by a guy who leaves threatening notes saying, "I know what you did last summer." And one-by-one, the teens are terrorized by this unseen menace, and finally the killer starts picking them off, one-by-one.
There wasn't a lot of frightening scenes, and the chase scenes were getting old quick. Way too long, no drama at all. You knew what was going to happen because it followed the predictable pattern. Pretty much a yawnfest.
Two interesting side-notes though:
1) It was the first movie starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr together (they also appeared in the Scooby Doo movies). Now they're married.
2) The movie was (loosely) based from a book by Lois Duncan. Duncan publically despised the film, turning her novel into a slasher picture, especially after her own daughter was found murdered in her car (imdb.com).
Helen: Well Bob, at summer's end I plan on moving to New York where I'll pursue a career as a serious actress. It's my goal to entertain the world through artistic expression. Through art I shall serve my country.
