Sean Archer has been chasing Castor Troy to avenge his son's death by the hands of the psychotic terrorist for six years. Now that he killed Castor, Sean must find a biological bomb by assuming the identity of Castor Troy by taking his face and being brought in prison. But Troy, who awakes from his coma, takes Archer's face in order to take revenge on him. Now, Troy turns Archer's life upside down by assuming his identity. Will Archer break free from his prison and get his face back, or will Troy have the last laugh?
Face Off is a techno thriller directed by the man behind action, John Woo, and stars John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. Director John Woo is the same man who brought us the action classic Hard Boiled and the more recent film Mission Impossible II. John Woo is the pure definition of action as almost every movie he has made has revolved around the next generation of action. He always pushes the limit a little bit farther with every film he does and always does an amazing job with all of it. With great performances by both John and Nicolas, the movie is one hell of a time.
Basically put, the characters are two completely different people. Nicolas Cage plays as Caster Troy, the assassin or sinner of the two men. He comes out more of a smart ass with a lot of wit. He loves to flirt with the women, has a strong sense of fashion and is more funny and witty then Sean Archer is. John Travolta plays as Sean Archer, a more serious family man then anything. Sean has to suffer from the loss of his son which taked place six years before the films present time. This changed everything about him and his family as the death hurt him, his wife and his teenage daughter.
What the actors must do are play two different roles in one movie. So when they switch faces, John Travolta must turn into the witty and funny one, and Nicolas Cage must play as the serious, heartbroken character. They both do a really good job with capturing each other the right way, and it comes out sort of believable in spots. It mustve been a complicated role because of the fact that these two characters are nothing in like. There are moments where the character is confused in a scene by something personal happening which takes on a tough spot for his character.
Like I had said before, John Woo is action. The latest movie I saw that he directed was Hard Boiled, which just came out as an amazing movie. With Face Off, there are 4 major action scenes, two of them which become an actual Face Off between them. The first scene is when they first end up running into each other in an airport. This just about jump starts the movie because right away things start exploding and people are shooting at each other and stuff. People are flying from shotgun shots and everything else. The second scene is a prison riot/breakout scene which was one of the funnest action scenes in the movie. Here we get a higher body count and everything plus there is a lot of hand to hand. The third scene is the best in the movie because this is when they face each other yet again. Theres a moment where each character is back to back on either sides of a mirror, then they turn around and begin shooting at eachother. This scene is more violent and it is just awesome to watch. The final face off was awesome, but more of a chase then anything. This turns to water as they chase each other in boats and everything and this leads to the climax of the movie which was done very well.
Face Off is action packed, awesome and emotional. There's plenty of action and heart for everybody. A fun movie.
