BUDDY, YOU'VE GOT THE CUTEST, LITTLE BABY-FACE
ADVANCE WARNING : My review of BUDDY may give away more of the story than you might like. READER DISCRETION IS ADVISED!
My sweet, little niece, BeckySue, her clever, little brother, BillyRay, and their closest friends, DannyLou and SaraLee, convinced me to watch BUDDY with them.
"It's the 'Best'!" they all enthusiastically assured me. What could I say to that?
This would be the first time in eons that I would get sucked into watching a film that was specifically directed at children.
To make certain that I wasn't the only adult having to watch this thing I conned my brother, BillyJohn, and his wife, PeggySue, into joining the 5 of us in the TV Room.
What a happy, little gang we were sitting there waiting so patiently for the opening credits of BUDDY to come rolling up on the screen. Yeah, we 6 (BeckySue, BillyRay, Dannylou, SaraLee, BillyJohn, PeggySue, and, yours truly, BillyBob)(what great names, eh?) just waiting to watch some flick. What more can I say?
To my delight (with the exception of a few forgivable flaws) BUDDY was actually quite entertaining, and, surprisingly, charged with emotion, too. Yes, that's right, certain scenes in BUDDY brought tears to everyone's eyes, including BillyBob's. (sniff. sniff.)
BUDDY was set in the 1930's. It was loosely based on the life of an actual person named GERTRUDE LINTZ (played by RENE RUSSO). LINTZ was a very wealthy woman. She had a kind heart, believed in animal-rights and was considered somewhat of an eccentric. LINTZ lived on a massive estate with her husband where she kept an incredible collection of live animals, including chimps, dogs, raccoons, geese, horses and hedgehogs.
Eventually, LINTZ would acquire a sick, baby gorilla. With all the patience in the world LINTZ nursed this ape back to health and named him BUDDY. This, of course, is the BUDDY that this flick is named after.
BUDDY soon reaches the size of a full-grown gorilla.
This film focuses closely in on the relationship between LINTZ and BUDDY. This relationship between these 2 becomes even more complex than you could possibly imagine.
Always with the best intentions LINTZ was determined to raise BUDDY as if he were a human child. BUDDY, in turn, being a wild beast at heart, but capable of very deep emotions, becomes possessive and emotionally attached to LINTZ from the very moment she fed him his first bottle of formula.
The gorilla make-up effects for BUDDY are so believable that you'll be convinced he's a real ape.
The cast of BUDDY, which includes RENE RUSSO and ROBBIE COLTRANE, put in fine performances.
BUDDY is a film that will make you smile. And BUDDY is a film that may break your heart.
Yes, I enjoyed BUDDY.
BUDDY is a film that can easily appeal to 'ALL' ages.
Hey! "It's the 'BEST'!", says BeckySue, BillyRay, DannyLou, SaraLee, PeggySue, BillyJohn, and, of course, now BillyBob, too!!
