Flat Man
Where to begin? Or maybe it's better just to finish. Thankfully, that's what this installment meant to this era of Batman, woefully lacking from the beginning. Still, it's more than a little depressing when a film with over a $100 million budget can practically double that in worldwide ticket receipts (which doesn't even factor in DVD rentals and sales) and be so universally labeled a flop. No tongue. No cheek. I get that it underperformed, but let's keep a little perspective; if you told me that a $125 million investment was going to gross $238 million dollars in six months, I'd be down.
As this edition came to a close, it misused the character Bane, and put a shadow on the careers of Uma Thurman, John Glover, George Clooney, and Chris O'Donnell, had the media referring to Alicia Silverstone as 'fat', and dressed up the current Governor of California in Dynamo's costume from Running Man (perhaps ironically appropriate). The color palatte continued to be abused to include clashing metallics; little kids in kindergarten have better sense of color.
If you want to break down the story seriously (no, seriously), what the Hell would Plantwoman - Poison Ivy (Thurman), officially - be doing with Freezyman - Mr. Freeze (The Governator), officially - who's master plan involves covering the earth in an eternal winter? Ivy also spends most of the movie, looking hideous as only Uma can, teasing every single man that she comes across to no appreciable end. There's even a bizarre competition for her affections between barely legal Robin and a lost, wandering Clooney desperately seeking some clue as to what Batman is supposed to be doing.
There are only moments - fleeting, fleeting moments; a line here, a line there - that make you think perhaps they weren't trying to torpedo the franchise once and for all. One wonders if either a) Schumacher is one of the most overrated schemps in the history of direction, or b) he simply wasn't on set for the entirety of the production. Given that his resume varies between kind of okay and total crap...
I'm going to go with "a".
